The connections of Live And Free celebrated his fourth career win from start number twelve after a determined ride from visiting UK hoop Tom Marquand. The son of Savabeel was ridden quietly from the second widest gate in the field of 10 runners where he was able to settle on the fence after a a good piece of riding from Marquand out of the gates. He cruised up behind the leaders up the straight and took a late split to storm over his rivals and win by 0.5L, defeating Island Missile and Turnberry.

"Tom (Marquand) has really announced himself today, showing the quality rider that he is. Live And Free is a horse with a lovely turn of foot and is a good mile and a quarter horse with a very bright future. The query today was coming here with the 58.5kg as he's never been able to carry weight as he's only a little fella but it was a good acheivment under that weight" commented John O'Shea after the win.

Marquand praised the effort post-race "We knew there wasn't alot of speed on paper so we presumed that there would be a bit of speed because everyone thought that so we just dropped in behind them nicely and John said to ride him for luck and he got the splits. He was one of the first horses i trialled when i arrived in Sydney and he gave me a nice feel- he's got loads of ability and an attitude to match"

Congratulations to his big group of owners Mr S D Perrin, Mr A D Paradice, Mrs R J Perrin, Placanica, Pay The Man, Mr M J Slater, Mr J D Melick, Mrs J Melick, Mr G A Mclachlan, Mr H A Mclachlan, Mr J R Braham, Mr T G R Worner, Ms L M Barp, Mr W Roberts, Mr D J Roberts, Arts Racing, Mr C Carrington, Mr L Williams, Mr M Acevski, Mr A J Dillon
