It was a rewarding win for the stable when Merlinite broke her maiden at Newcastle on Saturday. The three year old filly by Pierro, was having her fifth career start and was coming off a set-back which saw her scratched at the barriers at Hawkesbury earlier in the month and sent back to the trials after being fractious in the gates. The flashy filly jumped well from the widest gate in the field of 6 runners and settled outside the leader and grinded down the straight for a 0.75L victory.

"She's been a bit of a work in progress, but the penny is slowley starting to drop with her- she'll be even better when she gets her toe into the ground and over a bit further" commented John O'Shea after the win.

Merlinite's win topped off a good week for her owners Domeland who also had a winner with Bergen at Kembla last Saturday.
