It was a typical winter's day at Randwick on Saturday where a large group of Southern Lad's owners braved the wet and cold conditions to cheer him on after a string of placings this preparation. Trainer John O'Shea was confident heading into the race that he would be very effective on the Heavy 8 surface "He's rock-hard fit which is very important on a testing track and we know he can handle the going so it's no suprise to see him tough it out the way he did today" commented O'Shea after the win.

The lightly raced 4YO son of Ocean Park was having just his eleventh career start when returning to the winner's circle for the fourth time. "He's a real little bulldog, that's what I like about him" commented in-form apprentice Robbie Dolan after the race. "He has there to be beaten at the 200m but he picked himself up and kept working to the line".

Southern Lad was purchased for $75,000 from the 2016 Inglis Easter Sales and has now earned his connections over $170,000 in prize money. "He wasn't overlly big as a yearling but he had a purposeful walk on him which we loved" recalled Champion Director Jason Abrahams, "It's funny that Robbie (Dolan) describes his racing style as bulldog-like because that's exactly how we labelled him at the yearling sales"

Southern Lad is a half-brother to our very own multiple Group 1 placed Kuro who was retired last year. His dam has also recently produced the promising Chris Waller trained Milunka (by All Too Hard).

Congratulations to 'The Lad's" owners on a very well deserved Saturday metropolitan win.
