Diamil (IRE) brought up his second stakes win in as many preparations in Australia when taking out the G3 Summer Cup at Randwick on Boxing Day. For a short while it was another stable quinella in a feature race, until Berdibek (FR) was relegated to third on protest.
It was a well deserved feature win for Diamil after an unlucky run in the $2m Ingham won by stablemate Kirwan’s Lane. It was his fourth win since arriving in Australia a year ago, with his earnings for his local connections now surpassing $400k.
Stable favourite Berdibek was being hailed the winner at the 200m mark as he launch down the middle of the Randwick track, however his long searching run just came to an end as Diamil was overpowering him late. Despite having his second placing taken from him in the Stewards Room, it was still a welcome return to form for the old boy who was coming off respectable runs in The Ingham and Gong.
